Universitatea Din Oradea - Facultatea de Stiinte Juridice

In 1780 the Academy of Law, one of the oldest Higher Education Institution in Romania, was founded in Oradea. By a Royal decree issued on the 4th of May 1874 the Academy was transformed into a Faculty of Law, which used to have 4 year degree courses and 8 departments: Roman Law, Criminal Law, Civil Law, Commercial and Cambia Law, Financial Law, Common and Canon (Ecclesiastical) Law.

The Academy of Law of Oradea used to have a special impact on Romanian cultural life, since many prominent people studied here and were very active. Among them: Alexandru Roman, member of the Romanian Academy, the initiator of a "Reading Society of the Romanian Student Foundation", the first student society of a national rank, Eugeniu Sperantia, the author of the first course in the Philosophy of Law, George Sofronie, prodigious professor of International Law, Among the Famous Alumni of the Oradea Academy of Law, we should mention: Emanuil Gojdu, deputy; dr. Aurel Lazar - minister; Gh. Pop de Basesti - founder of the National Romanian Party; Vasile Mangra, orthodox Bishop: dr. Gh. Plopu, chancellor of the High Court of Cassation in Romania.

In the year 1934, due to unfavorable historical conditions, the Cluj-Napoca faculty of Law engulfed the Faculty of Law from Oradea.

Now the Faculty of Law and Jurisprudence has more than 1500 students and more than 500 of them receive government grants. The educational curriculum contains for each year fundamental compulsory subject's optional and facultative subjects.
Since the academic year 1997-1998 our faculty has adhered to the European Credit Transfer System which is now the basic for curriculum and it is meant to give the students the opportunity to study in other universities from our country and abroad.
